The Grosvenor Picture Palace, Oxford Road

Wynn Knott talking about her time as a projectionist in Manchester during the Second World War. Operating between May 1915 - May 1968, the Grosvenor Picture Palace could accommodate up to 1100 seated patrons at peak times. As one of the most popular cinemas of the period, the pictures were of a high standard, while the music was of the best quality. When live music was needed to accompany the playing films, members of the Halle made up the orchestra.
Regal Twin Cinemas, Oxford Road

The world's first twin cinemas operated between September 1930 and September 1986. This incredible accolade for Manchester was created due to the high demand for cinemagoing at the time. Having two screens each seating 800 meant that the same film could be staggered, offering double the showings for double the profits.

Mrs Morgan talks about the trials of film certification. The site of the Cornerhouse operated as a cinema for 80 years between May 1935 to April 2015. It changed names many times over the years from Tatler News Theatre, Classic Cinema, Tatler Cinema Club and Glamour Cinema Club. Each new iteration’s output ranged from the informative to the provocative.
