Where the Performance Never Happened
Where the Performance Never Happened is a locative sound project that explores the relationship between place, memory, and musical reconstruction. Rather than documenting the sonic environment of Bled as it exists, each work begins with a field recording made at a specific site and transforms it through instrumental performance and digital processing into a new acoustic artefact.
The resulting compositions do not seek to imitate the locations in which they were recorded. Instead, they offer imagined responses that preserve traces of the original environment while reshaping them through artistic intervention. Heard in situ through SonicMaps, each piece occupies the same physical space from which its source material was gathered, creating a dialogue between the listener's present surroundings and a reconstructed sonic past.
Together, the four works invite listeners to consider how sound can both document and distort place, asking what remains when a moment of listening has passed and only its echoes endure.
Creator: Phillip Matty
Phillip Matty is a composer whose work explores perception, memory, and the blurred boundaries between sound and meaning. Drawing on contemporary classical traditions, his music often investigates simulacra, timbre, and absence through instrumental, choral, and operatic forms. Alongside composition, he is active as a researcher, curator, and performer, with a particular interest in experimental listening and sonic environments.

Grounding
0:00
Grounding centres on the relief model of Lake Bled, a site that compresses the surrounding landscape into miniature form. The field recording captures the ambient sonic environment of this point before being interwoven with percussion performed by the composer. Three handbells are prostrated and struck to create resonant textures, alongside gestures that imitate the character of snare drum and wire brushes. Digital processing, including bit-crushing, phasing, and reverberation, transforms these materials into a work that reflects on place through abstraction rather than representation. Recorded on 21 June 2026 between 13:15 and 13:45 using a Zoom H5 recorder.
Rustling
0:00
Rustling was captured from a bench overlooking the lakeside park, where subtle environmental sounds emerge through attentive listening. The composition pairs these recordings with piano performed by the composer, creating a dialogue between the delicate textures of the surrounding landscape and the instrument's resonant, reflective sonorities. Recorded on 22 June 2026 between 15:45 and 16:15 using a Zoom H5 recorder.
Moving
0:00
Moving embraces the constant activity of the Bled Bus Interchange, where arrivals, departures, and transient encounters shape the sonic environment. Layered onto this recording are performances by members of the e.p.f. Lab Ensemble 2026, featuring violin, viola, and trumpet. The resulting work explores mobility and transition, placing live instrumental performance within the rhythms and textures of everyday public space.
